Becoming A Veterinary Nurse | Do You Have What It Takes?
Becoming a veterinary nurse or “paraveterinary worker” is one of the most exciting and rewarding job opportunities available to young men and women today. The starting salary is good, and you gain awesome experience working with animals that you can later use to become a veterinarian if so desired. In the USA and Canada veterinary nurses are actually referred to as veterinary technicians. Either way, the job is still the same. The role and responsibilities of a veterinary nurse vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. However, some roles remain the same throughout all jurisdictions. Most veterinary nurses will assist a veterinarian through observation, or by standing in the role of the veterinarian themselves. One can expect to address wounds, perform ear flushes, prepare fluid samples, etc.
They must also oftentimes use equipment such as radiography equipment. The duties and pay will vary depending on the area, as well as the experience of the individual. In the United States as well as Canada you are required to have usually an associate’s degree from a school or program recognized by the AVMA or the CVMA. Experience is also essential in becoming a veterinary nurse. Don’t fret, however, because more often than not the school or program in which you attend to achieve qualification will include this in the degree plan or program itself, giving you that much-needed hands-on experience. You can also choose to specialize in certain aspects of the field such as but not limited to animal behavior, nutrition, trauma, etc. Believe it or not, they are also opportunities to gather training in the Army, who uses technicians to work on dogs in the field. Therefore, there are a plethora of opportunities at one’s disposal to gather the required training and experience. A lot of these schools also accept financial aid, which will make it easier for lower-income individuals who want to improve their lives and enjoy a wonderful experience with animals. The average salary for a veterinary nurse in the United States is $27,272, which is a great starting salary for someone with an associate’s degree.
So, You Want To Be A Veterinary Nurse?
Becoming a veterinary nurse is very exciting. It takes hard work, dedication, and a true love for animals. It takes an approved certification to become one nowadays. One can get certification online at different online vet tech schools. Just be sure and look at the different colleges so that you know the different costs between them. Some can be expensive and some can be as low as a few hundred dollars. A veterinary nurse and vet technician are the same thing in case you’re wondering. A vet tech salary is very handsome, and anybody would be glad to be making the amount of money that the field pays. If you’re looking at becoming a veterinarian in the future, then becoming a vet technician would be the easiest way to gather the experience and skills needed to get hired when you get your veterinary degree.
If I could have done one thing differently, it would have been to become a veterinary nurse as soon as I could. However, when I was younger and thinking about a career, they didn’t have online veterinary technician schools. These days it’s a lot easier to gather the right certification to be able to get hired full time. I had to spend a lot of money on a state university, rather than a few hundred dollars and a few months of my life on an online certification. I love my job, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. If you love animals and you want a high paying career, then becoming a veterinary nurse might be just what you’re looking for. The hours are typically from 8-5, but there is the rare occasion when we have to go in for a service call or after a natural disaster, such as a tornado. You must also be good with people, not just animals. Why do I say this? Because with any medical career, you must break the bad news to the family, or in this case, the owners. For example, let’s say that a dog has heartworms, but he’s too old to accept treatment because it could kill him, but he’s also suffering from the pain. The best thing to do would be to put him down, right? Well, not everybody sees it that way, and they just want to take him home because they think they can work a miracle and make him better all of a sudden. Well, that’s not going to happen and you know that. So you must be able to convince the owner that it would be in the animals’ best interest just to put him down so that he didn’t have to suffer a painful and slow death.
You must also swallow your pride at the time. If I don’t know the answer to something, I don’t act like I do. I refer to my boss (which will be your veterinarian that you assist) and have him take care of it. The owners of the beloved pet won’t mind because they want the best for their animal, and if that means telling them you don’t know what to do, then so be it. Being a veterinary nurse is a wonderful job, but it does have it’s downsides like any other job. However, you must look beyond those and see the true reward of the job. Helping animals and other people.
